Are passengers allowed to bring dry shampoo on a plane? Yes, but there are some limitations. Read on to find out!

I have a problem.

Whenever I’m packing my bags for a journey, I always doubt whether I can include a certain item in my luggage and carry-on. Last time it was a razor, and now it’s my dry shampoo bottle.

So, I started googling incessantly whether I could bring dry shampoo on an airplane. And let me tell you – the information I found was NOT straightforward.

That’s why, to solve this problem for people like me, I decided to put all my research into a comprehensive guide and give a clear answer to this question.

TSA and FAA Regulations Regarding Dry Shampoo

You can bring dry shampoo on a plane, but you should follow strict rules.

First, keep in mind that TSA and FAA have different regulations regarding dry shampoo. For instance, the TSA allows travelers to bring dry shampoo in their carry-on and checked bags, as long as it is in a container that is 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item.

On the other hand, the FAA has limited the amount of restricted medicinal and toiletry items, including gels and aerosols, that are allowed in checked baggage. The aggregate amount per person cannot exceed 2 kg (70 ounces) or 2 L (68 fluid ounces). The capacity of each container must be at most 0.5 kg (18 ounces) or 500 ml (17 fluid ounces).

Can a can of dry shampoo explode?

It is possible for a can of dry shampoo to explode, but it is unlikely.

For instance, if a can of dry shampoo were to explode, it would most likely be due to high temperatures or if you shake the can vigorously.

If you are concerned about the possibility of a dry shampoo explosion, it is best to store the cans in cool, dry places, such as carry-on bags.

Is dry shampoo allowed in the checked-in luggage?

Yes, dry shampoo is allowed in checked-in luggage. However, there are a few things to keep in mind.

First, make sure that the dry shampoo is in a container smaller than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters). Second, pack your travel shampoo in a clear, quart-sized bag so it is easy to see and access during the security screening process. Also, be aware that some dry shampoos may contain alcohol, which is not allowed in checked-in luggage.

Finally, remember that aerosols and aerosol-like items are subject to additional screening, so be ready to have your bag inspected by security.

How many bottles of dry shampoo can you pack?

As I stated earlier, you can pack up to three 3.4-ounce bottles of dry shampoo in your checked luggage. But remember that if you stuff your bag with dry shampoos, you won’t be allowed to pack anything else because of aerosol/liquid limitations.

Also, I know from experience that sometimes the TSA will give you a hard time if you pack anything over 3 ounces, so I err on caution.

What happens if you break the limitations?

If you bring more than the allowed amount of shampoo (or any other liquid), you will need to have your bag checked twice. This means you will have to go through the security line again when you land to retrieve your bag, which can cause delays.

Also, under the new EU aviation security regulations, containers of over 100ml cannot be taken through the passenger security screening area. Passengers must surrender these items before proceeding through security.

So, if you want to fly with dry shampoo and not leave it at the airport, don’t break the rules.
